All industrial activities carry risks and with certain industries such as petrochemical, mining being more at risk. Incidents in petrochemical, mining or similar industries often results in significant asset loss and possible fatalities.
There are a number of risk assessment tools and studies available in the industry to identify, understand, assess and managing risk. These tools and studies are critical for decision making for all levels from designers, operators and management.
Bow tie risk analysis is one of the most common tools for risk assessment in the petrochemical industry. Diagram presentation of bow tie allows participants to visualize the barriers easily from prevention to mitigation of incident event.
Crude oil, natural gas, LNG, gas processing and export, oil refining, pharmaceutical plant, coal chemical processing, fertilizer and agriculture chemical processing, chemical refining, etc.
Bowtie analysis can be performed in all stages of project life from design stages to decommissioning to help assist with the assessment of potential incident events.
However, Bowties are often done first performed during design phase as part of SCE development. The bowties should periodical reviewed to ensure they reflect any changes to design that might occur over the project life.
